About Custom Post Types

Custom Post Types (CPTs) in WordPress are a powerful feature that allows for the creation of new content types beyond the default "Posts" and "Pages".

Common post types are:

  • People
  • Jobs
  • Meetings
  • Events
  • Departments
  • Facilities
  • Parks
  • FAQs
  • Timeline Events
  • Etc...

They are called Post Types because they look like posts but are customized to have specific information or content. They could easily also be called content types (and in some other CMS solutions they are called that). They help categorize and manage content more easily on your Content Management System (CMS).

Little, Interacting Databases

Breaking up some of the site content into databases allows it to be reusable, or syndicated, throughout the site while only maintaining one instance of that information. It also allows for easier reporting and oversight of those subgroups of content.

You can find your pages and post types, which are basically little databases of similar information, on the left side of your dashboard.

If you hover or click on one of the post types on the left side, it will open up a submenu with options for managing that post type. This usually includes a minimum of viewing them all in a list, adding a new one or managing the categories associated with them.
